Considered one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in North America, Vikingsholm castle sits on the shore of Emerald Bay with astonishing views of Lake Tahoe. Built in 1929, according to the wish of Lora J. Knight, a wealthy Chicago widow who purchased this then-isolated site and had it constructed into a Norse fortress from 800 A.D, Vikingsholm represents unique blend of art and history.

The Washoe exhibit, created by the tribe is housed in the Baldwin Estate portion of the Tallac Historic Site, a National Register District managed by the US Forest Service. It is located approximately 4 miles west of the junction of California State Highway 89 and US Highway 50, along the south shore of Lake Tahoe.

Built in 1903, the rustic but grand, wood-panelled, three-storied house was equipped with the very best utility systems, and was surrounded by carefully planted trees, lawns and flowerbeds. Today, the house, a fascinating example of the " opulent" tradition in Tahoe summer homes, serves as a house museum, complete with furnishings.

"Explore Tahoe," located on the bottom floor of the Heavenly Village Transit Center, and billed as an "urban trailhead" by its designers, entwines a wealth of natural history, recreation and transportation information. Situated on the south bank of the Truckee river - Lake Tahoe's only outlet, the original cabin, built in 1909, served as the home of the resident gatekeeper, whose duties included the measuring and regulation of Tahoe's water level. After the original cabin was destroyed by fire in 1978, the current Gatekeeper's cabin museum was hand carved from Lodgepole Pines on the same foundation. The museum features the history of Lake Tahoe, natural history displays and an exquisite basket collection. Open from mid-May to mid-October.

Lake Tahoe History Museum offers intriguing displays from old Tahoe on skiing, Pony Express, ranching, Indian basketry, the days of the resorts (Lucky Baldwin's, Globin's, etc.). For a small fee reprinting of historic photos is available. Also unique books, videos and gift items are for sale in the gift shop. All purchases contribute to the ongoing maintenance and acquisition of exhibits. Entrance to the museum is FREE, and donations are accepted. For groups and special tours call (530) 541-5458. Winter hours Friday and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with free admission. Memorial Day through Labor Day open Wednesday through Monday. Closed Tuesdays. During the month of April 2010, the museum is closed.

Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood is in a new 5,800-square-foot facility with interactive exhibits, children’s visiting area and community gathering area. The museum, reminiscent of an old boathouse, showcases the history of boating in Lake Tahoe. Former site of the 100-year-old Tallac Resort. In its days of glory, the resort included two large hotels, a casino, and numerous annexes and out-buildings. Nowadays, the site is home to Valhalla community events center and its annual Valhalla Festival of Arts and Music. The UC Davis Thomas J. Long Foundation Education Center provides visitors insight into why Lake Tahoe is unique and how science and research are used to restore and protect Lake Tahoe for future generations. The only Lake Tahoe science center includes a research vessel, virtual laboratory and 3-D visualization lab exhibits and is located inside the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences.
